The Chronicle has four factions, each with a distinct philosophy. You belong to exactly one. Your faction shapes how the world reacts to you, what investigations you can run, and which votes carry the most weight.
The four factions
- Iron Covenant — Hold the line, or there is no line.
- Ashen Communion — Through ash, we ascend.
- Dawn Seekers — Name the darkness, and it loses its teeth.
- Free Marchlands — Ours to hold, ours to keep.
When you choose
You pick a faction during onboarding, immediately after Episode Zero. The choice is meaningful — your faction colors your UI, controls which territory you can investigate freely, and determines which coven you can join.
Switching later
You can switch factions, but it costs you. After joining a faction, you must wait 30 days before switching, and switching forfeits any faction-specific cosmetics, season pass progress, and rank within the old faction. See Switching factions.
Undecided?
If you cannot make up your mind, the onboarding flow lets the story choose for you based on early voting patterns. You can override at any time before your first chapter.
What if I do not want a faction?
Faction membership is not optional — the world is shaped around the four philosophies, and being unaligned would lock you out of voting and investigations. The Free Marchlands, with its philosophy of independence and self-governance, is the closest thing to "no faction" we offer.
