We publish the exact probabilities of every random outcome in The Living Chronicle. Transparency is a legal requirement in several jurisdictions (Belgium, China, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom) and a core value of ours regardless.
1. Investigation Rarity Distribution
When you spend Action Points on an investigation, the outcome is drawn from the following base distribution:

These rates are identical for free and paid Action Points. Paying money never grants a higher chance at rare outcomes.
2. Pity Mechanics
To avoid streaks of low-rarity outcomes, we apply a soft pity system:
- Guaranteed Rare+: Every 20 investigations without a Rare or better result guarantees a minimum Rare on the next attempt.
- Guaranteed Epic+: Every 100 investigations without an Epic or better result guarantees a minimum Epic on the next attempt.
The pity counter is reset when the guaranteed outcome is received. The counter is tracked per-player and is visible in your in-app investigation log.
3. Contextual Modifiers
Some gameplay factors can shift the base distribution:
- Faction territory control: Investigating in territory your faction controls adds up to +1.0% to the Rare/Epic/Legendary combined chance, taken from Common.
- Chapter-specific events: Narrative events may temporarily boost specific rarities for all players. These are always announced in advance in the event description.
- First-time bonus: Your first 5 investigations ever use a boosted distribution (Common: 40%, Uncommon: 35%, Rare: 15%, Epic: 8%, Legendary: 2%) to help new players build their codex.
Contextual modifiers are capped so paid purchases never outperform skilled free play.
4. Season Pass Outcomes
The Season Pass delivers fixed, non-random rewards at specified ranks. There is no random element in Season Pass progression. Every player who reaches a given rank receives the same rewards.
5. Cosmetic Purchases
Cosmetic skins and avatar items sold directly in the shop are fixed-price, direct purchases. We do not sell randomized cosmetic boxes, lootboxes, or gacha bundles of any kind.
6. Audit and Verification
Our drop rate calculations are deterministic and open to audit. On request, we will provide independent researchers and regulators with:
- The pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) implementation
- Logs of drop results aggregated over a player sample
- Source code for the rarity resolution function

7. Compliance
This disclosure is designed to comply with:
- Belgium — Gambling Commission guidelines on randomized monetization
- China — Publishing regulations requiring probability disclosure
- Japan — Consumer Affairs Agency guidance on loot box transparency
- South Korea — Game Industry Promotion Act (as amended 2024) requiring probability disclosure
- United Kingdom — Gambling Commission and ASA guidance on paid random items
8. Changes
If drop rates change for any reason, we will:
- Announce the change in-app at least 7 days in advance
- Update this page with the new rates and an effective date
- Keep a historical log of previous rates below
